Wright's Indian Art > Pottery > Navajo > Sue Williams Crank (Navajo) > Tall Vase with Fillet
Sue Williams Crank is a sister of Alice Cling, and daughter of Rose WIlliams, the dean of contemporary Navajo pottery. This large vase is very traditional in form and decoration. The zig-zag fillet around the top is a new twist on an ancient form of decoration. She left a space on one side, as weavers used to do on rugs, to allow the creative spirit to escape from this piece, to be called on again. Sue has adapted her sister's glossy finish. Traditional Navajo pottery was un-burnished, with a rather primitive surface. The deep red of the clay and the irregular, dark fire clouds make for a rich, dramatic appearance. |
