Now, appreciation is no longer limited to a few discerning anthropologists or artists, and creative expression has gone well beyond the traditional pottery, weavings and jewelry. Artists who are Indian draw upon their heritage because they can't not do so. Indian culture has no separate boxes for art, religion, on-going life. Yet, instruction in techniques and exposure to the world at large have broadened the artistic horizons for many. Therefore, individual styles emerged and experimentation beyond the usual has resulted in newly minted categories: folk art, masks, stone sculpture, hot-blown glass are just a few. So, whether it's gratifyingly familiar or makes your jaw drop at the novelty, if it's made by an artist who is Indian it's Indian art!
