Wright's Indian Art > Masks

Wearing a mask transforms a person into someone - or something - else: think Mardi Gras or Halloween in our own Western culture.

Throughout history, masks have had ceremonial purposes in all cultures. A tribesman can become the incarnation of a supernatural being, and assume those powers, until the mask is put aside and he resumes mere mortality.

More and more contemporary artists are exploring this ancient form. Some reinterpret tradition; many are without any traditional references or meaning. Masks are made in many media, from clay, wood, gourds, or other materials. Part sculpture, part paintings, masks are also extremely decorative and add a dimensional vitality to wall art.
