Wright's Indian Art > Glass

Glass has been prized for its utility, fragility and luminous beauty since biblical times.

Only very recently has glass become a medium used by Native American artists. There are only a handful who have been bold enough to learn this challenging and decidedly un-traditional craft and turn it into art. There are various ways to produce glass art, but among the most ancient and most exacting is hot-blown glass.

Tony Jojola is one of the few among the few Native glass artists, to use this method. He is renowned for his hot-blown glass.

Following the example of his mentor, Dale Chihuly (the leading glass artist in the United States, if not the world), he has established a glass-blowing school and workshop in the Taos, NM area. It has already produced a new generation of Indian glass artists.
