Wright's Indian Art > JewelryJewelry: adding personal adornment to looki good - is a universal human impulse; wanting to look even better than the others around you is probably part of that, too. Jewelry that makes you look good (and feel good - almost the same thing) has varied by time and location. Indian jewelry in the Southwest originally consisted of pretty shells, bones, claws and chunks of colored stones. Later, trade beads and bits of mirrors and/or other Anglo-European artifacts were mixed in. Finally, in the late 1800's, a Hispanic smith showed a Navajo blacksmith how to make silver ornaments for his horse and a century of creativity and "tradition" began. Now, art schools, Indian art shows, television and ease of transportation have opened new horizons. A broader range of stones and materials are also available. New traditions are being created, limited only by the individual artist's imagination. How fortunate we are to live in this time and place when the boundaries of geography and technical skill have been erased, and choices are limitless!
